Dangerous Lice Treatments

Some lice treatments might do more harm than good.
An estimated six to 12 million people in the United States get lice each year and a large percentage of them are children. But what your doctor might prescribe to treat lice may do more damage than good. One of the treatment shampoos prescribed for lice contains lindane, and lindane is toxic. lindane shampoo is sold under the name "Kwell". Lindane (Gamma-Benzene Hexachloride) is a strong insecticide that has documented and serious health effects on humans.
Lindane is a proven carcinogenic and is cited by the EPA in America as acutely toxic. It is a suspected endocrine disruptor. This means that it disrupts hormone levels which regulate growth and reproductive health. Endocrine disruptors pose specific problems for children, whose reproductive systems are still developing. Lindane is reported to cause damage to the central nervous system. It inhibits the enzyme that allows neuro-transmissions between muscles.
Lindane is so toxic that it has been banned in 30 countries. Alan Lowenthal, a Democratic Assemblyman from Long Beach whose wife is a physician, recently passed legislation to prohibit the prescription or pharmaceutical sale of products containing lindane.
