Dealing with louse infestation

Louse infestations are often found by mom's who are watching for the signs of itching heads and/or frequent scratching. Brothers and sisters can catch it from each other. Close friends that sleep over, head-to-head contact or sharing combs and hair brushes and/or head gear can lead to the transfer of head lice.
Head lice have been shown by surveys to infest the heads of Caucasian and Oriental children but they very seldom infest those of African Americans whose hair may be more oily and flattened.

The Amazing Louse

Louse claws grasp human hair so firmly that they do not fall or wander out of it and yet they can crawl fast. Head lice suck blood by grasping the scalp with tiny hooks that surround their mouth, and painlessly pierce the skin with slender stylets. (Head lice feed several times a day but do not engorge themselves.) Most importantly, head lice neatly glue their eggs (called nits) to the hair shaft, usually within ¼ inch of the scalp. The tiny, pearl-like eggs (they look like miniature wax tear drops) stick alongside the hair so tightly that they can be dislodged only by being torn from their neat sleeve of biological glue by fingernails or a metal lice comb.

Usually nits found further away from the scalp than ½ inch will have already hatched; what is found is the empty shell which remains attached. The easiest way to remove cemented eggs is to cut them out or to
soak the hair in licenders oil for 10 - 30 minutes and then comb out with a metal lice comb. If any nits still remain, apply Licenders combing solution and activating powder .

Head lice are restricted to humans with a scalp surface temperature of around 80o F.
or a little more, but head-to-head contact and sharing of clothing, hair ornaments and grooming materials are the normal routes of invasion. Temperature preference and perhaps humidity is so critical that lice easily die at elevated temperatures. At lower surface temperatures (about 50o F.) lice become torpid and do not move or feed.

Head louse nymphs hatch from nits on hair shafts snatched by brushes and deposited on knit hats. The tiny nymphs then move toward the warmth of the next head covered by the cap or brushed by the brush. This normally limits transmission to siblings that have their hair brushed with a “family brush” or children who share knit hats or hair brushes of friends. Adult head lice are gray and about 1/8 inch long, about the size of a sesame seed. They often have a tiny dot on their backs. They thrive only on human hair and scalps. Hatching occurs about one week after attachment. Since lice go through a gradual metamorphosis, the tiny nymphs resemble adults. They grow to maturity in about 10 days. Adult lice mate and the female can lay about 50-150 eggs in their life of only several weeks.

Wetting the hair and rubbing the scalp with a towel irritates the adult lice and makes them move about, aiding in their detection. Life Cycle of Head Lice

Length of life cycle - The egg hatches within 8 - 9 days and the nymphal stages take approximately the same length of time. The life cycle takes place, therefore, every 18 days. The length of the adult stage in the male is about 10 days and in the female can vary from 9 - 22 days. A maximum of about 6 to 10 nits/eggs are laid each
day by each female and the maximum hatch rate has been found to be 88%. All lice feed on blood every 3 - 6 hours and can only survive about 20 - 48 hours without a blood meal. Nits are the size of the period at the end of this sentence. At cooler temperatures (50o - 68o F.) eggs may hatch up to 30 days later.

Head lice spread easily and infestations often occur at all social and economic levels, especially among school children who are in close daily contact. At least 10 million children are infected each year. Infestations are called pediculosis, which is a communicable disease. They vary in color from dirty white to reddish-brown to rust to grayish black in color.If the nymphal stages are passed on a person of blonde or light coloration, the adult louse is light in color, but if they are passed on a person of dark hair coloring, then the resulting wingless adult is more pronounced in coloration.

Lice are small - about the size of a sesame seed. They need a warm, moist habitat. They spread by crawling. They live by biting and sucking blood from the scalp and can not normally survive for more than 2 days unless they are on the human head. Eggs or nits (that look like tiny white or tan dots) are usually laid by the female close to the base of the hair near the scalp and they are firmly cemented to the hair. The eggs (and the empty shell) are known as nits and are always oval- or tear-shaped, and are glued at an angle to the side of the hair shaft. They are usually tan when alive and pearly or grayish white in color after dying. The nits usually occur near the scalp (clustered in groups), but can often be found nestled behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. The hatched egg is easily identified by its opalescent and translucent appearance. Just before hatching the eyes and other structures of the embryo can be made out through the translucent shell. On hatching, the top of the egg opens like a lid. Live nits may be occasionally found anywhere on the hair shaft, but normally they are found near the scalp and they are “super-glued” on and do not flake off like dandruff. They are so hard to remove we invented the term “nitpicking” to describe the difficulty. One louse can lay 150 nits a month (normal lifetime). They hatch in about 10 days, depending on the climate. Nits need at least 82o F.; and 70% humidity to incubate. During the incubation time the respiratory passages of the louse shut whenever the nits are immersed in water and they can survive under water for over 24 hours.The top of the egg supplies air and humidity to the developing louse.
Nymphal stages - There are three nymphal stages, all of which resemble the adult except in size and possession of sexual organs, but they do have some change in color. Head Louse Life Cycle

The head louse (Pediculus humanus capitas) the body louse (Pediculus humanus humanus) and the crab louse (Pthirus pubis) all occur on humans. All three cause considerable skin
irritation as they feed on human blood or crawl on the body. Typhus, impetigo, trench fever and relapsing fever have all been transmitted by body and head lice. Scratching can lead to secondary bacterial infections leaving children feeling achy, feverish and/or lethargic.

Human lice can establish and maintain themselves only on humans. A louse cannot hop or jump. They can, however, crawl fast. They are usually transmitted only through close personal contact. They are less frequently transmitted through the sharing of personal articles or toilet seats. For head lice, this includes combs, brushes and other grooming aids, hats, headbands, helmets, caps, headrests, wigs, curlers or other headgear, especially when these items are stored in shared lockers. They spread or infest by crawling, they live by biting and sucking blood from the scalp and can survive for up to 48 hours off a human head, and the nits on a hair shaft can survive from 4 - 10 days - so vacuum thoroughly and clean with LICENDERS enzyme cleaners.

Where do lice come from?

When people are confronted with head lice in their family, they usually ask, "How did we get LICE?" People try to figure out which friend gave the lice to them in the first place. But the answer is almost impossible to find out. Head lice is one of those things that people don't talk about. No one wants to let other people know that they have lice.

There is such a negative social stigma with head lice infestation that people are very embarrased to reveal they are fighting the problem, even to family members.So where did the lice come from? They could have come from anywhere and from anyone. Was it from the child in the class who seems to have the dirtiest clothes and hair all the time?

Cleanliness has nothing to do with it. Head lice prefer clean heads. Lice do not jump or fly. They infest a new head by crawling onto it. This usually happens with head-to-head contact. With children, such contact is suprisingly frequent and wide-spread. There are other ways of lice infestation as well. Shared brushes. Shared clothing such as jackets or hats. Or maybe two jackets, hats or scarves hung next to each other on a rack.

Lice also can transfer from one person to another on furniture such as a chair or couch. Cars, busses, theater seats, etc. can also be sources of infestation. Every human loses dozens of hairs every day. Lice lay their eggs (called nits) on human hairs. When someone with lice loses hairs, some of those hairs will contain nits. Nits can take up to 10 days to hatch. If a hair with a nit is in a couch, chair, car seat, theater seat, etc., it can hatch many days later and the baby louse (nymph) can crawl up to where it can climb on the next human head that passes by. Some people wonder if lice are spread by animals. They are not. Head lice are a human pest.

Because there are so many ways and places available for lice to spread, and because people are so reluctant to talk about their head lice problem it is almost impossible to find out where the lice came from. All you can know is that they came from another person. They have been transferred from one person to another for thousands of years and it looks like the problem is not going away anytime soon.

Head lice are spread easily from person to person by direct contact. People can get head lice by:
Coming into close contact with an already infested person. In children, contact is common during play, while riding the school bus, and during classroom activities in which children sit in groups close to each other.
Wearing infested clothing, such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, or hair ribbons
Using infested combs, brushes, or towels
Lying on a bed, couch, pillow, carpet, or stuffed animal that has been contaminated
Lice do not jump or fly. Lice are not spread to humans from pets or other animals.

Head lice infestation is diagnosed by looking closely through the hair and scalp for nits, nymphs, or adult lice.
Nits are the easiest to see. They are found "glued" to the hair shaft. Unlike dandruff or hairspray, they will not slide along a strand of hair. If you find nits more than 1/4 inch from the scalp, the infection is probably an old one.
Nymphs and adults can be hard to find; there are usually few of them, and they can move quickly from searching fingers. If lice are seen, finding nits close to the scalp confirms that a person is infested.

Teach your child how to avoid catching lice

Your child can avoid catching lice if they don't share hats, combs, brushes, ties, towels, helmets, ipod earphones, pillows, sleeping bags, etc. Try to keep long hair up in a braid. You might want to try our repellent, which contains citronella and can help repel head lice.
We advise not to wash the hair every day. Lice can attach easier to a
squeaky clean hair shaft than a dirty one. Build up of natural
oils and hair products can “coat” the hair shaft making it more difficult for head lice to grasp the hair.
We recommend parents do weekly head checks focussing on the nape of neck, and behind ears. Use the licenders metal comb

How can head lice be prevented?

You can do everything right and your family could still end up with lice. Head lice have nothing to do with hygiene or income level; anyone can get them. The most common route of transmission is head to head contact, such as two kids bending over the same coloring book.
Because lice can't live long off the scalp, it's much harder, but not impossible, for lice to be spread by sharing hats, brushes, hair accessories and combs. It's a good idea not to share these items.
Coming into close contact with an already infested person is how lice spreads. In children, contact is common during play, while riding the school bus, and during classroom activities in which children sit in groups close to each other.
Wearing infested clothing, such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, or hair ribbons, using infested combs, brushes, or towels, lying on a bed, couch, pillow, carpet, or stuffed animal that has been contaminated should be avoided. Remember, lice do not jump or fly. Lice are not spread to humans from pets or other animals.

Head Lice Combs

Previously, we introduced the subject of lice combs, and how to choose the best one. As explained in the past, that when treating head lice, the most important factor may very well be the lice comb. There are many different lice combs available these days. The comb that you use must have teeth that are spaced extremely close together. It is very important when you purchase a lice comb, that it is coming from a source that has expertise specifically in human headlice.
Some lice removal products are tested on pubic lice, or body lice. Both pubic and body lice are larger than the human head lice parasite. The lice nits and nymphs (baby lice) that live on the heads of children are extremely small. When a nit is first laid, it is as tiny as a speck of dandruff, or the knot in a piece of thread. If the tines of the lice comb are not tight enough, these tiny nits will not come out of the hair. Left in the hair, the nits will continue to incubate and grow, eventually hatching into new bugs, and restarting the cycle of head lice.
Remember that even after you use an effective lice shampoo, nits in the hair are still viable. Lice Extermination for your House

A lice problem in the house is that people shed hair in places that they rest their heads. This hair can have a nit on it. Nits are laid near the scalp because they need human warmth to grow. However, a nit that is a few days old, and closer to hatching may not die even if the hair falls off the person. There are so many different types of combs being marketed for the removal of nits. Not all head lice combs are created equal! A proper nit comb must have teeth that are spaced closely enough together to catch every nit. The plastic nit comb to the left is the great grand daddy of combs.
I remember my parents using it on me. It scratched my scalp and the plastic teeth broke off and spread apart so it didn't catch all the nits. It did make a wonderful musical instrument when I wrapped a piece of wax paper over the teeth and blew into it.

Treating Lice with Enzymes

A louse can crawl off of a head onto a pillow, the head rest of a couch, or any other location where a person typically rests their head. Although this is not where head lice thrive, it can happen. The louse will die usually within 24 hours off of a human head. Without human blood it simply can’t live. It cannot lay eggs anyplace off of a head either. In such an instance, it is possible that a louse that has crawled onto furniture can crawl back onto a different child’s head in the short time that it is still alive. Despite the fact that this situation seems unlikely, it can happen, and the risk is significant enough to warrant some attention. Dangerous Lice Treatments

Some lice treatments might do more harm than good.
An estimated six to 12 million people in the United States get lice each year and a large percentage of them are children. But what your doctor might prescribe to treat lice may do more damage than good. One of the treatment shampoos prescribed for lice contains lindane, and lindane is toxic. lindane shampoo is sold under the name "Kwell". Lindane (Gamma-Benzene Hexachloride) is a strong insecticide that has documented and serious health effects on humans.
Lindane is a proven carcinogenic and is cited by the EPA in America as acutely toxic. It is a suspected endocrine disruptor. During the course of every school year there is the common occurrence of an outbreak in head lice. What many parents don’t realize is that children can get head lice more than once.
While it is troubling to think about, it is possible to be victim of the head lice epidemic more than once. Head louse are the most common louse problem in Israel & the United States and can easily affect a crowd several times. They are spread by physical contact, which is what makes younger children in school so susceptible.

When treating head lice, you have to be careful that others around the infected person do not become infested themselves.
There are a number of things you can do to treat head lice, but it is vital that you remain patient and calm because it takes time to get rid of all the nits and you need your child to cooperate.
The most common method people use for lice treatment is using a lice-killing shampoo. Before applying the shampoo change your clothes,and wash what you were wearing.
You want to comb out all of the lice and nits. This can be a difficult process because it takes a long time and they are hard to see.

Every 2-3 days you should check for lice and nits in the hair and comb them out. Do this for a few weeks until you are positive that all of the lice and nits are out of the hair.
Lice are contagious and it is important that you are cautious during the lice treatment. Wash clothing in hot water, we recommend the Licenders Laundry Additive. Head lice don't fly or hop, but the adults can crawl fast, making them hard to spot and causing them to spread if they come in contact with another child's head. So besides the initial problem of being infected with head lice, many schools in America will not allow an infested child in the classroom until the head lice are gone.

Why Are They A Problem?

Head lice bite the scalp, causing it to itch and the person infested to scratch. These bites can become infected.

Also, the lice will crawl around in a person's hair and lay their eggs (nits). Lice eggs are small, oval-shaped or yellowish-white and attach to the hair shaft.
One louse can lay up to 100 nits that hatch in 7-10 days and take another 7-10 days to develop into an adult.

If the nits are allowed to hatch, the infestation can go on and on and spread to others. Therefore, to effectively end the problem, it is important to remove all the nits.

The Medical field advises that only active and confirmed infestations of head lice require treatment. Doctors point out that even trained medical professionals sometime have difficulty distinguishing actual head lice from dandruff or aphids or other insects blown into the hair.

Only under proper magnification can active living lice and viable eggs be identified. An itchy scalp alone is not reason enough to treat for head lice. Once an active infestation is confirmed several treatments are available.

Shaving the head is the most traditional albeit the most radical or treatment for head lice. But it works. Head lice thrive in the warmth of the hair follicles, without hair to maintain their body temperatures they soon die. It is important that you begin treating lice immediately before it spreads and becomes a serious problem. A single female louse can lay up to 150 eggs, or nits, in her lifetime. The longer you leave lice in the head without treating them, the quicker lice will multiply across the scalp.
Nits are silvery-white in color and oval in shape. Nits will appear as tiny grains of sand that are cemented to the hair shaft. Nits are easier to identify than adult lice because there are more of them and they don’t move around. If after you apply a treatment you still find more nits that means that the problem is worsening.
A lice infested person may have around 10-20 lice in their head. As soon as those lice lay nits, it takes the nits just seven to nine days to develop and hatch eggs of their own. That is why a quick and thorough response is necessary.

What are head lice, and how do they differ from other lice? Head lice (Pediculus capitis) are small parasitic insects exquisitely adapted to living mainly on the scalp and neck hairs of their human host. Their six impressive legs are elegantly evolved to grasp hair shafts and provide a striking example of biological specialization.

Long associated with people, head lice have been recovered from prehistoric mummies. Head lice are equal opportunity parasites; they do not respect socio-economic class distinctions. Their presence does not connote a lack of hygiene or sanitation practiced by their host.

Head lice are mainly acquired by direct head-to-head contact with an infested person's hair, but may infrequently be transferred with shared combs, hats and other hair accessories. They may also remain on bedding or upholstered furniture for a brief period.

Say the word “lice” and everyone immediately gets nervous. It's a natural reaction—after all, the thought of tiny bugs living in your hair and drinking your blood is not cool. Still, head lice is common when the kids are young. There are six to 12 million infestations every year, particularly with kids ages three to twelve. “The most important thing to remember is that a case of head lice is a pain in the neck, but it isn't a disease, nor does it cause disease. Try not to get over-anxious. Treat it and move on.

Here's how to prevent, recognize and treat head lice.

You can do everything right and your family could still end up with lice. Head lice have nothing to do with hygiene or income level; anyone can get them. The most common way head lice spreads is head to head contact, such as two kids bending over the same coloring book. Because lice can't live long off the scalp, it's much harder, but not impossible, for lice to be spread by sharing hats, brushes, hair accessories and combs.

Still, it's a good idea not to share these items.

2. Head lice do not transmit disease.

3. Head lice feed only on human blood.

4. Head lice do not come from animals or pets and cannot survive on a nonhuman host.

5. Itching of the scalp is usually the first noticeable sign. The itching is caused by an allergic reaction to the saliva of the lice. 50% of people do not have this reaction!

6. The time between when the egg is laid until the live insect dies is about 30-33 days. A female louse can lay up to 300 nits.

7. There are approximately 5 female lice for every male louse.

8. Head lice do not jump or fly, but they can crawl really fast!

9. Humans cannot catch nits. They are eggs and do not travel.

10. Transmission of the adult head louse usually occurs through direct contact.

In the past few weeks, we have presented helpful information about cleaning your house when your child has been diagnosed with lice or nits. We have explained that when dealing with human head lice in the main living areas of your home, you need to be concerned with places where a person is likely to rest their head. When dealing with the bedrooms, linens, toys, and closets need to be addressed as well, because it is more likely that there are stray hairs around with viable nits on them. To finish up the job of cleaning your house of hair lice and nits, do a quick review of your bathrooms. Remove any used towels and wash them in hot water in the washing machine. Dry them on high heat for at least 30 minutes. Remove visible stray hairs that may contain nits, from bathtubs, sinks and showers by collecting them with a paper towel. Dispose of these hairs by placing them in a knotted plastic bag and toss them in your trash. You have removed hairs from the head rests of chairs and couches, and treated the relevant items in your bedrooms and bathrooms. The same procedure applies to recently used coats and jackets. If you have a closet with such outerwear, it is only significant if the clothing has been used in the past 2-3 days before the lice diagnosis. In such a case, refer to our previous post on cleaning clothing during a lice infestation. Remember that head lice treatment for your house is mostly a matter of removing stray hairs that may contain nits. Human head lice will not survive on floors, or on chairs, or in closets - because they need to feed on human blood a few times a day. As we have stated many times before, a human head louse will die within 24-48 hours off of a human head. The way to preserve the job you have done ridding your house of lice and nits, is to maintain the lice-free status of your child's head. Once you have used an effective lice shampoo, and methodically combed out all of the nits, you must continue the combing out process every night for about two weeks, to ensure that there are no remaining nits. Although there are several different kinds of head lice products to help treat the problem, many times it will take awhile before completely removing all lice, nymphs and nits. The important thing to remember is to be patient. Many people become discouraged when attempting to get rid of head lice. There are several problems and processes that can go wrong and cause the treatment to be delayed. Everything from not treating the problem correctly to the lice actually becoming immune to the chemical based shampoo or solution can go wrong. The most common problem is that people do not follow the directions correctly with head lice products. Skipping even the smallest step can cause the entire process to fail. LICENDERS head lice products are laid out with clear directions, along with what tools are required. Another problem that goes along with following the directions is follow-up treatments. In almost all cases it will take at least two or three treatments to get rid of all lice. Generally, the first treatment will kill all of the live lice and the second treatment will kill the nits that hatched. Typically you should wait around 7 days before applying the second treatment.

Although it is rather difficult to detect, there are certain things that you should look for when identifying head lice. Many times it is children between the ages of 4-11 that get head lice, making it vital that you check your child every so often. Another great way to identify whether or not your child has head lice is to pay attention to the common symptoms. However, first it is important that you know what lice look like. Head lice are grayish in color and very difficult to spot in someone’s hair because of their small size. The average size of an adult louse is between 2 to 4 mm. While their size makes it difficult to find them, it is also their quick speed that makes it difficult to identify them. Louse move very rapidly with their six legs across the scalp of the infested person. The reason lice are found in and around the head of people is because they require warmth and humidity to survive. Head lice are most commonly found around the back of the infested person’s head and behind their ears, being that these are the warmest areas on the head. What is troubling is that lice show no signs of preferring a dirtier scalp that is warmer. In fact, head lice tend to prefer cleaner scalps more than anything. Removing Lice Nits from Clothing

After a child has been treated with a Lice Shampoo, and had the nits properly combed out, attention must be given to the home. Removing the possibility of a re-infestation of headlice is crucial, and not very difficult. We have addressed treating bed linens in Lice Information and Remedies for the Bedroom
The same lice treatment instructions that apply to bed linens apply to clothing and outerwear. Any item of clothing that has been worn by a child in last few days prior to being diagnosed with lice or nits, could potentially contain a hair with a viable nit on it. If it was worn in the previous 24-48 hours the clothing could theoretically even contain a surviving hair louse. This includes sweaters, sweatshirts, and outerwear such as coats and jackets. When dealing with nits or head lice, it is wise to be extra cautious about items worn directly on the head – hats, scarves, baseball caps, earmuffs, etc. You do not have to fumigate your closets and drawers! Only items that have been in direct recent contact are cause for concern.
In a closet where clothing is pushed tightly up against each other, you should also treat those garments that were pressed directly against the items that we have described above. You do not need to be concerned beyond those secondary items. Remember, lice are human parasites. They need human blood to survive. Lice do not embed themselves in clothing. The only concern is a louse that came off the head within the last 24 hours, or a lice egg ("nit") on a hair, that was transferred by friction on to an adjacent item.
Any items that can tolerate it should be washed in hot water. If they cannot be washed, they should be put into the dryer for ½ hour on high heat. If neither of these is possible, these items should be bagged for 48 hours.
Tie the top of the bag with a knot or a twist-tie. In the case that there is a live lice bug on any garment, it will die within 24-48 hours because it has no access to human blood. In the case of stray hairs with nits, the fact that they are in a sealed bag is equally beneficial. Any newly hatched nymph will die right away without a human head on which to feed.

(New York - WABC, November12, 2008) (WABC) -- There is an outbreak of head lice across our area, and it is highly contagious.
It often happens at this time of year and it is a lot of work to get rid. But there are some simple treatments that can help.
Eyewitness News reporter Stacey Sager has the story.
Mekala Pavlin was sent home from her school today here on the Upper West Side and she certainly wasn't the only one. Groups of 8th graders in the gifted program here at MS 54 were told to leave the building after their school nurse said they have head lice.
Emma Lawrence, 8th grader: "The nurse sat down with gloves. She took like the quickest look at my hair and she just opened the part and she said, 'oh, you have lice.'"
Miranda Langrehr, 8th grader: "Automatically, by a certain period of school, I hear people were going home by the numbers and my class number started going down."
In fact, the department of education says about 20 students here have been sent home recently. This pesty problem, not only at one school, but there are reports of cases at public and private schools all over the tri-state area right now.
Experts say it's that time of year where kids sometimes come home with it after summer camp. And not every school has such an aggressive lice checking program right at the start of the year.
